Lattakia/Ugarit - Ras Shanra

Nine kilometers to the north of Lattakia lies the Kingdom of Ugarit-Ras Shamra, which enjoys a human and cultural value, not to mention the international value because it introduced into the world one of the most important gifts, namely the first alphabet.

Archeological studies show that the city consists of five layers the oldest of which is about 6000 years before Christ, and the latest layer, which is visible now belongs to (1600 - 1200 BC).

Since the discovery of the city and the start of excavation work (1928 - 1929 AD) over 1700 plates have been unearthed. These plates contains legal, law, commercial and diplomatic texts showing the high cultural, mental and economical level that prevailed in Ugarit.

There, the oldest musical note (1400 BC) was discovered. The buildings discovered there show beyond any doubt the high prosperity and luxury the city came to know in the mid 2000 BC.

This is obvious when a person sees the remains of the walls, the royal palace which includes a hundred halls. Besides, there are the ruins of the castle In the city's northern section. In the southern part, there are the residential quarters one of which is the quarter of temples of "Dajen", "Ael" and the library.

Many other items were also uncovered. These include stamps, weights, pendants, statues, pots, and pieces of jewelry. These are all on exhibition in Damascus museum.
